WANT TO FEEL LESS [FILL IN THE BLANK WITH WHATEVER YUCK YOU ARE FEELING]?

Do something for someone else. Yep. As simple as that. And by do something, I don’t mean do something huge (though those are awesome too).

It can be something as simple as giving a compliment, like my friend and fellow yogi @caroncaresyoga was doing here, as we were getting certified together at @90monkeys don’t remember when ago. Or sending loving energies to someone.

Research shows that giving, contributing to someone else helps lower blood pressure, increases self-esteem, lowers stress levels, supports happier and longer lives.

“Go do something for someone else” is one of my favorite tasks or funwork (bc who needs more homework) to give to my clients. It has the added benefit of immediately getting you out of your head and giving you perspective about the world around you.

Don’t believe its effect? On your next break today, look out the window and send a good, loving thought to every person walking by.

Most of you know that I started practicing yoga as

Most of you know that I started practicing yoga as a teenager.

Around 13 years into practicing, I noticed the strangest thing: my 23 year old body was getting tighter, not more flexible, and I struggled with injuries.

I almost gave up on yoga, but then I started learning about alignment and everything changed.

Not only did I overcome my injuries, my practice got stronger and my body got more limber again.

In fact, I was able to go about four inches deeper in all of my poses!
What shocked me most was that my practice advanced rapidly over time, whereas my other yoga friends seemed to plateau in their growth.
There was something about the alignment.

I knew I'd found the secret to a safe, lifelong yoga practice -- and I dove all in.

Fast forward 22 years, I'm still teaching alignment. 
Why?

Because it transforms people's practice, lives, and enhances their longevity!

Enrollment is now open for our next online module at @90monkeys which will focus on unpacking the alignment method I use in my practice.

Through this module, starting late September, you'll not only experience it in your own body, but you'll discover tools to teach it to others.

Let’s talk Trikonasana - triangle pose. A comm

Let’s talk Trikonasana - triangle pose.

A common instruction heard in yoga class is, “fit yourself between two panes of glass”

Would you agree? 👎🏽👍🏽

To be blunt, we're not fans.

Performing trikonasana "between the glass" can be damaging to the hip joint. In fact we know of far too many yoga practitioners in their 40s and 50s who've had hip replacement surgeries. Although genetics have a part too, these yogis all blame repeated trikonasanas (with both thighs externally rotated and pushed forward) for their hip damage.

Here’s why:

🦵The hips are a ball and socket joint which means that in order for the head of the femur to rotate in the socket the femur heads need to be integrated. Tucking the tailbone way under, externally rotating both thigns, and pushing the femurs forward does the opposite of integrate.

How can you create integration?

Give these quick alignment tips a try and tell us how it feels:

1️⃣ From Downdog - step your right foot between your hands, spin your left heel down parallel to the back of your mat, and align your feet heel to arch. Settle all four corners evenly.

2️⃣ Tone your legs by energetically drawing your feet towards each other

3️⃣ Place both hands to the inside of your right foot and walk them off the front left corner of your mat 6-8 inches resisting in the opposite direction with your pelvis

4️⃣ Keep your pelvis back and your left thigh rotated in, place your left hand on your left hip as you draw your right sitting bone under to externally rotate your front right leg

5️⃣ Without losing that, slowly begin to straighten your right leg and move your right fingertips to the outside of your right shin

6️⃣ Stretch you left finger tips towards the sky and from your pelvis into your feet, press down into the earth and extend from your belly through your spine, arms, and head

*️⃣ The most common misalignment is not taking your feet far enough apart! Don’t be afraid to take up space on your mat!
