Course Description

Have you noticed that yoga classes around the world have become more and more physical with an emphasis on sweating and acrobatics?

Does it seem like the total depth and breadth of what yoga offers is lacking in most classes?

And how about your teaching? When you’ve tried to share something philosophical, could you sense the “inner eye rolling” from your students?

That may be because student expectations have changed as well. Yoga teachers report feeling increasingly less confident sharing aspects of yoga such as philosophy, self-transformation, or yoga history with their students in the current climate.

At 90 Monkeys we believe we can make a difference and change this, one student at a time!

But it takes skills and knowledge!

We believe you’ll need the following tools to convey yoga’s full potential with your students:

  • Be steeped in the teachings, philosophy, and history of yoga so you can be an authentic and motivating educator
  • Have a system for keeping your teachings concise, brief, and clear so when you share them, they are well received
  • Learn to teach from a place of authority and confidence, so students are open to “less common” approaches to yoga
  • Experience daily lectures with Douglas Brooks on the Shiva Myths (see topic below)
  • Learn a system for class planning when you’re working with a theme
  • Explore a system to distill yoga philosophy teachings into practical, relevant, and relatable themes for the modern yoga student.

Whether you are a student of yoga or a teacher, this module has something for each of you. Join Tantric scholar, Douglas Brooks, Ph.D. for captivating and life changing lectures on yoga philosophy (see topic below). And if you teach yoga, work with Amy Ippoliti on discovering fun, accessible ways to share these profound teachings with your students without being overbearing, boring, or freaking anyone out!

Douglas’s Lectures

The Saundaryalahari, the Wave of Beauty, is one of the most remarkable and poignant works of Sanskrit poetry devoted to the great goddess. The astonishing grace and refinement its poetry couples with a rich, esoteric teaching of goddess-centered Shakta Tantric practice. The first portion of the Wave of Beauty is known as the Wave of Bliss and is regarded a direct disclosure of the goddess herself, concealing and revealing her sublime presence in nature, culture, and deep within the human experience.

The Wave of Beauty is an exquisite, fascinating invitation to the embodiment of goddess as a sublime presence taking the triad form of image, mantra, and yantra. As we explore the goddess in her triadic heart of beauty that we are proffered the gateway keys to the unconscious that unlock the origins of feeling, thought, and understanding.

We will study, meditate, contemplate, and learn elements of the ritual practices that shape this sadhana of the Shakta tradition. No previous familiarity is required or expected. With an open mind and a willing heart we can begin this journey together. Translation of the text and everything you need to enter into this practice will be provided.
