Dear Yoga Teacher: What if I’m Not Feeling Dark Today?

The yoga teacher, regardless of age, becomes a spiritual leader in the minds of the students whether the teacher feels that way or not. This can create a situation where students won’t speak up or give you feedback when they disliked something you did or spoke about in class. While they’d like to share, they are often timid out of respect and not sure how you’ll take it.

You would be surprised how many students approach us at 90 Monkeys with raw honest feedback for their teachers about what they liked and did not like in class hoping we’ll pass it on to our community of yoga teachers! And so, we created this column as a venue for students to anonymously give their feedback.  We hope it gives you insight into your teaching!

Dear Yoga Teacher,

Once again you started your morning class with a sad tale of things gone wrong.  You told us to “go into the dark place deep within you” and “sit with any negative energy flowing inside you.”
Well, I couldn’t find it.  I woke up feeling good, ready to start a new day.  I came to your class full of fresh morning energy.

I know that sharing that life is not always blissful is your way of trying to connect with us.  I also understand that you want us to practice acceptance, grace, and gratitude even in adversity.

Many mornings, though, I just want to wake up my mind and body to something simple and joyous.

With love,
Your yoga student
